In 1910 French chemist René-Maurice Gattefosse was working in his lab, when an explosion injured his hands. He rinsed them in lavender oil and they began to heal the very next day. Gattefossé coined the term ‘aromatherapy’ and developed the idea that essential oils have psychological effects, and that an entourage of different oils result in a powerful synergy.
