Is 'Super Troopers 2' Worth the High?

Welcome to “Is It Worth the High?”, where our writers see newly released movies, listen to the latest album drops, and try other experiences while high to determine whether they’re worth your time, money, and most importantly, your cannabis buzz. This week, Dante Jordan kicked off his 4/20 celebrations by checking out Super Troopers 2, the long-awaited sequel to one of the most beloved stoner comedies from the past 20 years. Should you spark one up and see it meow, or is your cannabis better suited for other activities?

High Experienced (1-10): 27. Dog, I was fucking smacked. Higher than I’ve been in quite some time.

With sequels, especially when it comes to cult-classics, you’re always worried that they’re too little, too late and completely unneeded, but Super Troopers 2 is a pleasant surprise when you take it for what it’s worth: a movie for you to get wicked stoned for so you can go laugh at a bunch of goofy low-brow comedy.

Super Troopers 2 is a delightful reminder that it’s okay for movies to only have the purpose of being silly as hell. It doesn’t try too hard to be some 100% Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh feature film, and most importantly, it doesn’t try to force you into a conversation about if it’s better than the original. Instead, ST2 simply takes you on a ride of “Hmmm, so what has the gang been up to?” It’s well aware of its audience and its purpose of being sheer entertainment for those post-session couple of hours where your brain is on Cloud Nine and you just need to sit and stare at something that doesn’t force your brain to overthink.

The sequel takes place in a French-Canadian town that’s converting to a US territory as a city in Vermont, and the gang is chosen to provide law enforcement for this town. This task proves to be a lot harder than they thought when they receive a very cold welcome from the Canadian townsfolk, as well as the Canadian mounties who lose jurisdiction as soon as the town becomes a US territory. Hilarious shenanigans (YOU KNEW I WAS GOING TO DROP A SHENANIGANS IN HERE) ensue, and in the midst of it all, due to some kids all hopped up on some drugs colloquially known as Mountain Dew, they uncover a huge drug smuggling ring that takes them down the rabbit hole of “Whose drugs are these and why are they here?”

If I had to describe the movie in one sentence, I’d say it’s like being in a car on a long road trip, and you end up taking so many detours to see sights along the way that you temporarily forget where you’ve even going in the first place, until you get there and it’s like “Ohhhhh yeahhh, that’s right!” Super Troopers 2 tends to venture off-plot for the sake of comedy, but that’s perfectly fine, because it will have your overly stoned ass cracking up.

Most of the laughs are centered around the differences between American and Canadian cultures, and ST2 does an exceptional job of highlighting some of the dumb stereotypes across both countries. The cast delivers the performances you want from them, and much like the first film, Farva steals the entire show—I walked out of the theater thinking he might be one of the best movie characters ever. There is one running joke, which centers around women being overly emotional, that quickly gets old and stale, but overall, Super Troopers 2 is a funny stoner movie, and if you loved the original, you’ll probably love this one, too.

Is It Worth the High? Yes. Super Troopers 2 is worth the high, and you should definitely get smacked and go check it out. Happy 4/20, my friends.
