This week in Cannabis: A compassion society in British Columbia has closed its doors after 20 years of community service, Osheaga’s cannabis policy is a strict one, and an agricultural competition slated for the fall has added its very own cannabis category.

Vancouver Island Compassion Society Closes After 20 Years

For 20 years the Vancouver Island Compassion Society has helped sick and ailing members of its community with affordable access to cannabis.

In the face of Health Canada’s new regulations concerning product displays and permissible conversations around product, the organization doesn’t quite fit the new retail marketplace.

“They’re glorified jewelry stores, very glitzy, very hip. It’s a retail market—it’s not a community health service,” said employee Robin Krause.

You Can Bring Cannabis to Osheaga, but Only If It’s Sealed

Osheaga hits Montreal’s Parc Jean Drapeau this weekend, and for the cannabis inclined, there are some policy stipulations you should understand before attending.

Rather than attempt to insist Montrealers, Quebec’s most enthusiastic cannabis consumers, not to smoke cannabis while at Osheaga, the festival has instead made only one demand of attendees: if you bring cannabis, it has to be a legal product bought at the SQDC (or other Canadian legal recreational seller)—and the package has to be sealed, presumably with its tax stamp intact.

This Fall Fair in BC Has a ‘Cannabis’ Category—and the Mayor’s Judging

Birtish Columbia’s Grand Forks Fall Fair has opened its agricultural competitions to cannabis cultivation for this September’s festivities. Judges, including Mayor Brian Taylor, will pick the region’s best indoor and outdoor grows in an effort to honour the local cannabis community.

Danna O’Donnell, president of the Grand Forks Fall Fair, says cannabis “has been a really big part of our area for many, many years.”
