U.S. Surgeon General Believes Medical Marijuana is Helpful

February 5, 2015

In an interview with CBS (starting at the 3:45 mark), the new U.S. Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, made some very interesting statements about cannabis:

“For certain medical conditions and symptoms, marijuana can be helpful…I think we have to use that data to drive policymaking.”

Incredible how one little sentence from an influential person can resonate and echo throughout a nation.

While Dr. Murthy did not explicitly endorse the legalization of cannabis for medical or recreational purposes, he did say that the current cannabis debate represents an “interesting story that’s unfolding in our country right now. We have to see what science tells us about the efficacy of marijuana and I think we’re going to get a lot more data on that.”

A wonderfully logical and sound response – follow the science and see where it leads. Dr. Murthy’s remarks represent yet another strike against prohibition and one more step towards reclassifying cannabis under the federal Controlled Substances Act.
