Swing State Voters Support Cannabis Legalization More Than Any 2016 Presidential Candidates

Published on April 8, 2015 · Last updated July 28, 2020

Here’s some news that makes you go “hmmm”: A new Quinnipiac poll of swing states found that the support for legalizing cannabis was higher than for any of the potential 2016 presidential candidates.

Voters in the critical swing states – Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania – showed overwhelmingly strong support for medical marijuana legalization, while their support for the preliminary presidential candidates is lukewarm at best. Support for medical marijuana was polled at 84% in Ohio and Florida, and even higher at 88% in Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton had the strongest support of any of the presidential candidates, but her support never exceeded more than 50%.

Even recreational cannabis had more support than the 2016 candidates, with levels at 55% in Florida, 52% in Ohio, and 51% in Pennsylvania. Of those who polled in favor, less than 15% say they would be likely to use cannabis if it were legal, making that support all the more crucial. In Ohio and Pennsylvania, support for recreational cannabis outnumbered support for Republican presidential candidates Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz by nearly 2-to-1.

Now how's about voters start brushing up on these presidential candidates' thoughts on cannabis? #JustSayKnow
