Ancient Princess Battled Breast Cancer With Cannabis

Eleven years ago in the Altai Mountains of Russia, scientists unearthed remains dating back some 2,500 years: a Siberian Princess, beset with breast cancer, resting alongside a jar of cannabis.

Through archaeology study, scientists have determined that the princess (nicknamed the ‘Ice Princess’) was of high class, decorated in the most complicated and beautiful tattoos that were distinct from other remains from that time period and serve as evidence of her importance in the eyes of her tribe. She was terminally ill and welcomed on camp in the Ukok Plateau during winter.

Researchers conjecture that the princess consumed cannabis habitually to cope with her illness, potentially explaining her reverence as a “chosen being” who could “communicate” with the gods. After all, altered states of consciousness have long been connected to spirituality. Weakened by disease and strong intoxication, the kinsmen cared for the frail princess, treating her as a shaman until her final breath.

This month we honor women and men around the world who are battling breast cancer. We hope this true and novel story gives you comfort that you are not alone, that belief in a plant that has spanned the ages. Here's to having the courage to speak out in support of cannabis education, as well as the strength to never give up.
