Winter is Coming: Snowboard on the Block Hits Downtown Denver This Weekend

The 3rd annual Snowboard on the Block festival is coming to downtown Denver tomorrow, September 12th, 2015. The event features the newest snowboard film releases from around the world, not to mention a star-studded rail jam event, Denver’s best food trucks, and musical acts like Talib Kweli and Suicidal Tendencies.

In anticipation of our own attendance (Leafly will be there handing out all kinds of free swag, so come find us!), we sat down with one of the event’s production managers, Darin Evangelista, to find out what to expect from this year’s festival.

Leafly: How did Snowboard on the Block come about?

Darin: Before Snowboard on the Block there was actually Snowboard on the Rocks, a similar event we held at Red Rocks. But it all really started with hosting snowboard film premieres throughout Colorado. Eventually that turned into hosting many premieres in one day.

L: What’s your favorite memory from the event in previous years?

D: A lot of the most exciting memories are behind-the-scenes moments that really come from the thrill of hosting such a massive event. But besides that, the rail jams are always memorable because they feature many of the stars of the films. So we get to watch them compete live, and then watch the video that they worked all winter filming, all in the same day.

L: Which musical act/film are you most looking forward to seeing?

D: Obviously I am excited for the major acts like Suicidal Tendencies and Talib Kweli, but there are a ton of lesser-known bands that I hope get a lot of attention, like Electric Citizen and Elder. Then there are the local acts like Colfax Speed Queen and Plum that I am really looking forward to as well.

L: Tell us a little more about what we should expect from the Van Doren Pro Jam.

D: One thing you can expect is a lot of style and creativity. We have a lot of top talent who all have a very unique perspective on snowboarding. It’s also exciting because we're giving the opportunity for an amateur to earn a spot in the Pro Jam. At 12:30, the Monster Army Am Jam starts, and the winner of that will then go on to compete with the pros. It will definitely make for an interesting event.
