New Strains Alert: Grandma’s Sugar Cookies, Chocolate Sap, and More

Published on July 28, 2017 · Last updated July 28, 2020

Happy Friday and welcome back to another New Strains Alert! This week we are focusing on a collection of hybrid phenotypes. Not sure what a phenotype is? Here’s a quick breakdown:

The plant’s genetic makeup, also called a genotype, acts as a blueprint for growth: it allows a spectrum of physical possibilities, but it is up to the environment to induce these characteristics. The physical expression of a genotype is referred to as a phenotype, which is simply defined as the traits that the environment pulls out from the plant’s genetic code.

Genetic diversification is what allows plants and animals to survive and adapt to their environment. For those of you who want to dig a little deeper, Mendelian inheritance explains how species possess dominant and recessive genetic traits that are passed on and combined in predictable, yet uncontrollable combination. Unique phenotypes of cannabis can have surprising results, such as high-THC seeds popping with higher levels of CBD or fruity seeds popping with spicy aromas, and so on.

These genetic outliers manifest in all kinds of fascinating ways. We have a few unique incarnations this week, including a Chocolate Diesel dominant version of Citrus Sap; a Tahoe OG Kush phenotype appropriately named “Grape Soda”; and an SFV OG cut that pushes its earthy, citrus OG flavors deeper into the gardening. These are just a few representations of the expansive genetic diversity in cannabis kingdom. Find your favorite phenotype and share it with community by writing a review or submitting a strain.

Clementine’s Terpentine

Clementine’s Terpentine is a skunky 24K Goldphenotype that smells like turpentine. Turpentine, for those who don’t know, is a solvent rendered from the resin of tree, usually pine trees. This hybrid strain has dense, bulbous nugs and delicate orange hairs. The buds give off a sour, sweet aroma and can help you get physically active or mentally engaged.

Chocolate Sap Leafly cannabis strain tile
Chocolate Sap

Chocolate Sap is a Citrus Sap (GG4 x Tangie) phenotype that leans heavily toward the Chocolate Diesel genetics of its GG4 parent. Originally nicknamed Gorilla Sap, Chocolate Sap’s smell isn’t the pungent, chemical bouquet of GG4, but rather chocolatey and herbal to the taste. The palate is subtle and smooth, with notes of cocoa nibs and basil which open up to a gentle citrus finish. This balanced hybrid is a truly recreational strain, improving mood and outlook with each flavorful puff.

Grape Soda features a pungent citrus aroma with notable grape notes on the palate, and the breeder recommends this strain for depression, anxiety, insomnia, indigestion, inflammation, and minor pain.
