Fire & Flower could one day be as common as Tim Hortons across Canada.

The outlet on Bellerose Drive was one of the first cannabis stores to open in the province on Oct. 17, 2018—the day that cannabis became legal across the nation— along with four other locations under the Fire & Flower marquee.

The brand has since grown to more than 22 locations spread across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, and there’s more to come. Plans to open stores in British Columbia and Manitoba are already underway.

Situated in the Inglewood Town Centre, the St. Albert location positions cannabis like any other commodity. Locals in the area can add and can cross off cannabis when running errands at the nearby Safeway or Canadian Tire.

While there’s very few actual cannabis products on display, the selection of accessories and ancillary items provide all the eye candy, while self-serve stations populated by tablets and a tactile strain-selection wall offers some visual interest.

Despite there being no bud samples found anywhere in store, there are a few different ways to explore the selection of cannabis products available.

Firstly, find Fire & Flower’s signature strain selector: a peg board hung with colourful hexagon-shaped cards each representing a different strain. The cards are colour coded and categorized by vague effects under headings like “engage,” “boost,” “spark,” “mellow,” “rest,” and “arouse.” The cards also detail specifics like strength, pricing, and cannabinoid and terpene content.

Other ways to browse include digital menus searchable on tablets positioned on a hightop table at the centre of the room, and white boards with handwritten spotlights on strains, “Tokin’ Tricks,” and staff recommendations.

Of course, there’s no need to go it alone. As a company press release puts it, “all Fire & Flower shops are staffed by highly trained ‘cannistas’ with extensive knowledge of cannabis and cannabis-related products,” and they’re ready and willing to answer questions and assist in making selections.
