Stoned

The feeling of being intoxicated from consuming cannabis, often associated with an intense relaxation and sedation. People who enter this state of mind regularly are known as “stoners.” However, the effects of consuming cannabis are varied and can also be uplifting, euphoric, energetic, and creative.

“Let’s get stoned tonight before we watch The Bachelorette.”

“Dude, I’m too stoned to even get off the couch right now.”

A history of getting stoned

“Stone” and “stoned” have been used in multiple contexts throughout history, but most often to denote an intensity of feeling or inebriation like “stone cold” or “stone drunk.” It was first associated with drug use in the 1950s, and by the 1960s, it was clearly a reference to cannabis. Like Bob Dylan said, “Everybody must get stoned.”

Is getting stoned the same as getting high?

Dozens of terms exist to explain the multifaceted euphoria of cannabis when entering the endocannabinoid system. Although there is some debate, getting “stoned” is often associated with an intense relaxation and sedation, and is similar to words such as baked, slumped, and loaded, which describe a couch-locked, uncoordinated, and zoned-out experience. Being “high” often implies more energy, focus, activity, and productivity after consuming cannabis.
