Happy 4/20, dabbers! Today is the day when everyone drops what they’re doing to celebrates cannabis. If you don’t know the legend of 4/20 or how the term was spread throughout the cannabis community, you can read all about its evolution into a marked holiday on the calendar that is celebrated around the globe.
Growing up, 4/20 meant two things: smoking copious amounts of ganja with my best friends in every ridiculous way conceivable, and being able to loudly shout my feelings about cannabis legalization. There were rallies imploring change and smoke sessions that served as veritable potlatches with the exchange of ideas, food, art, and of course cannabis. Now that cannabis legalization is making sweeping progress across the nation and beyond, many 4/20 celebrations have evolved into flash sales at dispensaries with locations offering ‘Black Friday’-like specials or weed-themed music festivals and concerts.
This is the awkward face I'm going to make all day… 😂💎⛽🔥😥HAPPY 420! #blazeit #happy420 . . . #aviddabber #Seattle #leafly #onlydabthebest #onlythebest #onlysmokethebest #dab #dabs #cannabis #dabbing #dablife #dabstagram #dailydabbers #hash #puffcopeak #dabbersdaily #weshouldsmoke #highsociety #stayhigh #concentrates #710 #420 #710community 📷 @juliasumpter
I love getting deals on cannabis as much as the next person, and of course I want something fun to do while I’m sparking up for the 4/20 celebrations. But it’s important to remember that while those of us in legal states enjoy the fruits of generations worth of labor to seed the change of American drug policy, there are others out there still suffering from the oppression of the war on drugs.
Hell, there’s still a lot of work to be in states that have already legalized. Take my home state Washington, for example. We still can’t meet with friends in public for a cup of coffee and responsibly share a joint while we catch up. Washington residents still aren’t authorized to grow our own plants (unless we have a medical recommendation). Thanks to restrictive packaging laws, we can’t even smell our flowers before we purchase them. We’ve come a long way, but there is still much work to do before true progress is actualized.
So on this highest of holidays, I urge you to pause at some point to honor the pioneers who have blazed the trail for us. Spark one for the leaders of this movement—people like Jack Herer, Dennis Peron, ‘Brownie Mary’ Jane Rathbun, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, and the countless others who have stood up for basic human rights and championing the potential in cannabis to positively affect our communities.
While you’re at it, burn one for those who have been unjustly persecuted for the simple fact that they enjoy cannabis; for those still locked up today as a result of social injustices and the disproportionate number of convictions within our communities of color; for those who have found comfort in cannabis even as their health deteriorates; and for those still struggling to find access to cannabis, simply to improve their quality of life.
Celebrate today knowing that together we have accomplished so much, and if we continue to push for what’s right, we can sow the seeds of change. Keep proving those who think you’re just a stoner wrong by redefining what it means to be a stoner. And if all that feels a little too heavy for you on a day like today, then kick back, relax, light up, and lighten up! It is cannabis after all.

Fresh pressed flower rosin for #420 🗜💦🔥🚀 . . . #aviddabber #Seattle #leafly #onlydabthebest #onlythebest #onlysmokethebest #dab #dabs #cannabis #dabbing #dablife #dabstagram #dailydabbers #dabbersdaily #rosin #weshouldsmoke #highsociety #stayhigh #concentrates #710 #420 #710community 📷 @juliasumpter
Every year for 4/20, I save up a little nug from all the flower I’ve been smoking since ringing in the new year (affectionately calling it my ‘archive’). It’s a 4/20 tradition to break out the archive and enjoy all the various flavors I’ve squirrel-stashed over the first quarter of the year.
This year, I decided to take a small portion of my archive and press it into some rosin, creating a complex blend of potency and flavor. The dabs from this mini slab showcase so much variety, nearly every dab I take from it is a little different. Some have fruitier notes like citrus and berry, while other doses lend dank, gassy kush flavors. It’s a bit like dab roulette except each one is a winner.
Have a happy 4/20, y’all! I hope you’re enjoying yourself and sharing great herb with one another. Let me know how you celebrate 4/20 in the comments section below or post them to Instagram using #aviddabber and tag me @the.avid.dabber.
Spark one for me, and rest assured I’ll be dropping dabs all day for every one of you. Until next time, stay high and ONLY SMOKE THE BEST!
