The best cannabis strains for sleep and insomnia

May 9, 2016
(Gillian Levine for Leafly)

Insomnia is the worst, but luckily cannabis can be an effective sleep aid for many. It can slow racing thoughts,  dissolve pain, relax muscles, and deliver its own sleepy chemicals to help you fall and stay asleep.

Cannabis and sleep: 9 things to know about your herbal nightcap

We put together a list of sedating strains to give you an idea of what to look out for on your next visit to the dispensary. But first, some tips to keep in mind:

  • THC strains are typically the most effective for sleep. If THC agrees with your body and doesn’t cause unpleasant side effects like anxiety, a THC-dominant strain might be your most reliable source of sedating effects.
  • Go easy on the high-THC strains if it’s anxiety keeping you up. A light dose of THC can float you to sleep, but larger doses can worsen anxiety in some consumers. You may want to try a strain higher in CBD if you’re sensitive to THC.
  • Edibles can help you stay asleep longer. Though inhaling cannabis yields faster effects, edibles last a lot longer.
  • Browse Leafly for sleepy strains. Find out which strains other Leafly users have described as “sleepy” here.

Finding the right strain for you is a personalized endeavor and often requires a little trial and error. The strains below offer a few starting points—take note of which ones you like or don’t like, and use those shapes (cannabinoids) and colors (terpenes) to guide you to other strains that are likely to help you achieve a good night’s sleep.

Tahoe OG Kush

Tahoe OG cannabis strain

Primary terpenes: Limonene, caryophyllene, myrcene

With effects that tend to be heavier than your average OG Kush hybrid, Tahoe OG is a godsend for many insomniacs. Smoking or vaporizing this strain can yield fast-acting effects that let muscles relax, easing that need to roll around in your blankets all night.

  • Your Mom 4 Ever

Thank you for this article. The biggest issue is that most of these are NOT available at the dispensaries in CT and so what they do have is not that great.

  • Your Mom 4 Ever

    Thanks.

    • Cyril Tarrant

Does anyone have a recipe for cannabis cookies with amounts? I need for insomnia.

  • Kenneth Ludorf

I have tried 7 of the 10 listed here, they are all available in Michigan. I have sleep apnea, so I can’t take sleeping pills, these strains are far better than pills. I suffer from insomnia frequently, and after days of 1-2 hours of sleep, these are Godsends. It gets dangerous to drive without proper sleep, working is strenuous, and my mind gets loopy. I would be simply exhausted yet unable to sleep. A strong indica always seems to make me sleep. I can’t wait to try the 3 I haven’t tried yet. Thanks, leafly!

    • John Juan

      Which 3?

      • Kenneth Ludorf

Ogre, Querkle or 9 Pound Hammer are the three I haven’t tried yet. I recently got some Silverback Gorilla that put me to sleep every time I used a half gram of it. My eyelids would keep getting heavier and heavier until it was impossible to keep them open.

    • eric

Hi Kennneth, I ´m a sleep apnea sufferer too and cannot tolerate normal cannabis because It gives me anxiety, but really need a product that can help sleep, have you finally reviewed the other 3 ?

  • KPWF

My challenge isn’t falling asleep but staying asleep…four hours after I hit the bed I’m awake and unable to fall back asleep for 2-3 hours. Any strain better for longer sleep/through the night sleep? Without having me zombie-like in the morning?

    • David Wills

I make chocolate coconut oil edible candies, usually around 60% Indica and 40% Hybrids. Each 1 tablespoon chocolate is around 120mg or so. I eat 1/4 3 hours before bedtime and I’m out all night.

      • KPWF

Thank you! I think my dosage was just too low. I don’t like to feel stoned and generally look for high CBN and low THC. But I’ll try this. Thanks!

      • John

Could you post a recipe David?

    • Lizbins

David Wills’ info is excellent! Edibles are what you want KPWF. You can time your consumption so that four hours into your night you are medicated. I hope you have access to legal marijuana. New products are coming out all the time, so if one thing doesn’t work for you another might do the trick. If you are not comfortable with marijuana I urge you to do your own research. You can choose low THC strains if you do not like the feeling of being high.

      • KPWF

I do have MMJ and just haven’t found the right dose. I don’t like feeling high but I DO want to sleep!

        • Lizbins

I used gel caps from the local health food store to split the capsules until I built up a tolerance. I also switch brands which helps me with tolerance issues. I thought the capsules were pricey at 25 to 33 dollars for 10 capsules but they worked! I am sure you had nights that you would have paid anything to sleep, I know I did and now for the price of an artisan coffee I finally can.

        • Kassandra Tomlin

Do you need a prescription from Dr for the cannabis so it won’t affect your job

      • Dion Gibbs

Hate a strong high, then choose a Indica dominant with high CBD in it or buy Hashish which, will give you a mellow high, but not make you intoxicated and it will make you hungry as heck, nothing in Cannabis World I came across honestly works better for both appetite and sleep at the same time as a good Moroccan Hash or a Lebanese Hash. I too suggest edibles but try buy Muffins, they contain higher THC content but because it is absorbed through the bowels and stomach lining, it is slower to start working but when it does, you do not get high you get shut eye, Best I ever had came from Abraxas in Amsterdam (they are a useless cheating dealers though, they take seed orders and do not send out seeds), but it was a 500mg Marijuana Muffin (not Hash Cake), nothing has came close, will try Capsules 2 X 300mg for night sleep soon since Syrup did not work well and Dabs well since my health problems so bad, I still do not get high of them, local Social Club watched me dab half a gram then smoke a joint and he brought me a 1gram Dab of Sour Diesel Shatter after and recorded it and I did it and just felt relaxed, not a cough or a closed eye. They was surprised it is why their doctor who works with them has said, once RSO is in, I should go straight on a gram daily without the usual 100mg twice daily then being built up to a gram over time. I honestly now understand why Michael Jackson was so stressed and so desperate for some sleep and pain relief he took the most extreme measures, why he came of MMJ (yes he used) was beyond me, maybe because of This is It, i was interfering with his performance, but it was a fatal decision and even in my worse times, when Pain has induced PTSD with me, I have felt to slit my wrists or take a month of Oxycontin and die in 1. But I never would or do because o f Cannabis, my pets and the notion in my head if I kill myself those in genuine need of hard drugs will not get access to them and that is cruel.

Two 4 hour phases with a 2 hour period of activity in between is actually the body’s natural way to sleep. It’s been documented that this is how most humans used to sleep. The single 8 hour sleeping phase seems to have evolved out of the busy schedules of urban living. Maybe embracing this natural cycle might help? Unless, of course, it isn’t practical for you. Our ancestors seem to have used this period of activity for socializing, eating or sex. Or you know, checking the fire and patroling the perimeter, if you go back far enough. They’ve also done studies where they keep people for days in a space with no clocks and constant lighting conditions and found that human naturally develop a multi phasic sleep schedule when they have no way of telling time.

I can testify to the Kosher Kush! Best for sleep for me so far.

  • Lizbins

In a legal state- I take a three tiered approach to lifelong insomnia. A bowl of indica for immediate effect. Indica tincture, starts working in about 30 minutes. A Night time capsule taken with water won’t kick in for about 2 hours but lasts 4+ hours. This adds up money wise but after trying everything, and I mean everything, this has worked for me. I feel great in the morning, no hangover at all! Hope it helps.

    • KPWF

What night time capsule do you use?

      • Lizbins

Hi KPWF, I am in WA state. One brand is Fairwinds the product is Relax indica.
Another brand is Caps, the night time variety. These are both 10 milligrams.

        • KPWF

          Thank you!

I have studied Cannabis 365 a year for 20 years, smoked for 18 years, I have smoked in Britain, France, Spain, Mexico, USA, next year in Morocco and if things change for the good Libya too. Since I have been given a small field in Rift Valley Northern Morocco and I can grow a few thousand plants there of my choice, they will do all the work and prepare it for domestic use and international trade, plus, my guy recently took 10kg of the highest quality Hashish with some the rarest land races on Earth and he turned that SOB in to 4kg of Rosin Shatter, was a lovely sight, he teases people, he does not sell online his too professional, but he will make videos showing beating the drums for hash, live roll for sticky black Moroccan Hash (almost as good as Nepali Temple or Indian Manala Cream), he will just take a fit full of pure Cannabinoid crystals he has beat with the drum and just set fire to it all so his friends and followers can see hash does not burn hard, it turns instantly to oil when it is produced correctly.

In Spain capsules are expensive but bucket load stronger than 10mg, here 1 X 150mg Capsule is 5€ or 1 X 300mg Capsule 10€, they tend to have much cheaper Cannabis now than America but here by law you cannot make a profit only break even and if you profit from Cannabis sales it must be declared and put back in the business for our Private Members Clubs. Only thing we do not have here I want to try is Cannabis Patches for Fibromyalgia which, it was designed for and for quitting smoking since patches are high dose, slow release over 24-72hours.

        • Dion Gibbs

I have Cannabis Syrup, cheap enough bottle 3 times bigger than Sativex 10 times cheaper than it at only 40€ it is for all people who use recreationally very potent, like when you take Valium or Baclofen the first ever tablets just puts you to sleep. But for me, the first taste was a bit bitter, but one night Zoplicone, Valium, Baclofen, Oxycontin, OxyNorm (Oxycodone) Concentrate, Heat Pads the usual I try for insomnia and chronic back pain, got me no sleep, I then took some syrup still no sleep, took a quarter of the bottle in one go and woke up 4 hours later as if I had only closed my eyes for a second. I am sadly, one those folks who still need to use conventional big pharma drugs and Cannabis combined and any of them on their own fails or does not help enough or my drug dose keeps going up. The thing I honestly found works best on sleep, is Cannabis Blueberry Muffins in Amsterdam, those sons of a bitch got half a damn gram in each muffin, one of them and you be waking up the next day or if you take it in the morning because you had no keep all night, you will wake up look out the window thinking you had no sleep because your be sleeping all day.

    • quirk

At 1930hrs. CDT., I put 4ml tincture and 1/2gr. decarbed flower in 4oz. peach yogurt. Next thing I know, it’s 0300hr. and time for a massive urination event, security check, little fruit and ice water and back to bed ’till 0600hr. Get up bright eyed and bushy tailed, no aches and pain, no depression and well rested. Indica dominant strains. This has been a game changer for me.

      • eric

Could you tell me what the plant name is please ?

  • Lori allin

Is there a strain that helps my insomnia but WONT make me hungry?

    • Sylvia Jordan

that is what I am looking for. I am hoping a hybrid of both sativa and indica will balance and not give me the munchies. Do not want the munchies.

  • papabrock

Also if you are a lifelong smoker/user and still have insomnia, try sobering up. That’s where insomnia left me. People need to honestly look at their alcohol consumption too, because it only takes one drink to throw off your bodies natural sleep cycle..No one will call you an alcoholic for having one drink a day, but when it comes to tossing and turning half the night it needs to be considered and tested.

    • jeanbodie

If I have any alcohol after 4pm, i cannot sleep. It seems to have an action that causes the cannabis not to have the same effect. I don’t normally drink but ’tis the holiday season so I have drank in the past. Now I no longer do it. It’s not worth staying awake all night and wasting good cannabis action.

  • John Juan

My problem is, I am just getting into all this and am having a horible time finding a one stop shop as far as seed banks are concerned. I find one strain here, one there, even Nirvana Shop is a challenge and does no have a single seed listed here.

need help finding a strain that doesnt get me very dizzy or paranoid but enough to sleep, i have panic dissorder so paranoia and dizzy start triggering thoughts and freaking out and thats no fun. Someone able to tell me a good strain or even edible that wont mess me up too much but where im really relaxed and feeling good and not freaking out. Tahoe og kush was the best for me out of those stats wise on the negatives, looking for ones like that one.

    • Natasha

I really like the Marley Natural CBD Rich. I have generalized and social anxiety disorder. I smoke this during high anxiety situations in combination with lexapro. I love it.

      • normanwilsonjr

I have generalized and social anxiety myself, hell isn’t it. I went to Colorado and tried some pot, it made me super paranoid and my heart was racing 100 miles an hour.

        • Dawson Michelle

you must have tried a sativa dominant strain and that is not good in most anxiety cases from what i have been told.

if you ever try again, make sure you try an indica or indica dominant hybrid. also, cbd does take the anxiety away, so a high cbd, low thc strain is best for that.

this is my experience. many sativas beat the hell out of my anxiety. but, when i start feeling anxious now, because of a sativa or just because of my issues, i use my cbd strain which is acdc and within minutes i dont feel like my heart is about to explode. just got my fl mmj card and have been experimenting with the best strains that my only.local dispensary has.

          trulieve is the dispensary.

my indica is grandaddy purp but i find it takes a lot and then a little while to fall asleep, and omg eating everything in sight. i use this in late afternoon, evening, night.

i have a hybrid of trainwreck, tastes delicious n citrusy, and keeps me balanced through the day.

i was recommended to vape high cbd ALL DAY, and i do. it keeps me calm amd my anxiety at bay for the most part. it is acdc strain

and i got a jack herer sativa. if i vape too much, i feel a lil anxiety but vape 1 to 2 hits of the cbd acdc and it kills the anxiety and.leaves the other relief there, just toned down a little.

good luck if you try again. the budtender should make sure they tailor your choices based on your unique needs amd challenges, so let them know your challenges.

you can decarb your cannabis and make your own whole plant pills. They work great. Decarb longer to convert some of the THC to CBN too if you want less psycho-activity.

I am very sensitive . Smoking 1/2 a hit gets me high. Smoking works best for me. My last batch wasI pure CBD where I got a good relaxed sense of well being in my body but only stayed asleep for 2 hours. I need just a bit more of something to keep me asleep. THC makes me paranoid and Sativa does the same but with anxiety. Any ideas? Thanks much.

    • Pekka Papu

Maybe you should try pure indica strains for insomnia, hybrids tend to be strong.

    A TRUE UNTOLD CANNABIS STORY
I have been using cannabis for synaptic adjustments while living at 30x the speed of normal processing of external information…..Go smoke cannabis young man…. thanks to Kaiser Hospital 1994…who would believe such a thing at that time and place… Well… I was first sent to a state doctor by Kaiser to document.. if that was truly my mental state of affairs…… There are soo many dynamics to this Marvel-comic-like -condition that I can not even begin to explain. …At the end of the day past present and future …you see things you can not have……and the worst thing by far you can not change things no matter how far out in the distance..this ability doesn’t come with free rain . Tested I have.. So lets talk cannabis,I go deep as the laws of nature will allow…..SLEEP….. The truly sedative strains will hang you over any less….you wake up as it wears off..Sativa..! Three things just build your tolerance…smoke a little less….knock yourself out a hour or two earlier. Or CBD in the morning will wake you up better than any coffee or energy drink available…that simple..!!! For real-deal true medical users needs who really can not sleep because it hurts in so many different ways.. or worse they cant …..!!!! The-Good….The-Bad….The Real-Ugly ….The Good…There are for real sedative cannabis strains….

Leafly however does not list a single sedative strain at all not even close…closer to the opposite for real medical sleep needs. The Bad… hard as hell …I think hell is much easier than trying to find a real sedative strain in a dispensary period. The real Ugly…Growers wont grow sedative-strains,they care nothing about the medical side of Sleep…why…. they smoke what they grow and most popular to sell. It gets worse their are so few sedatives that ever reaches the dispensaries….when they do… the staff and their friends will get it ALL. Sedative-sleep strains are truly the most sought after kill to get it cannabis strains. Highly Highly in demand to the point…when I am looking at various dispensaries menus….and they all boast over 400 different items to serve you with the greatest most knowledgeable staff in the world…. and when I call the 5 that have a few sedatives on the menu guess what happens 5 out five times I call……and ask before I take a drive ….they always always pause when i asked about their sedative strains…the answer is always we are out….but we still have 399 strains, items for you. What is the average of 5 shops having a combined total of 2000 strain/ items and the 5-7 strains I am asking about is all gone…that just sounds impossible. That is the real ugly…..It does not matter if I give you the top since 1994….. finding real sedative strains is the real nightmare. You have to find a friend that can really grow….it is the only answer. Yeager Is The Best, F1 Private Reserve True dark multiple colors GSC,, Black Domina Is The Strongest, Aurora, Indo-heavy Paris, Mendocino Purple, Yes..Purple Obama 8.5 sedation, Orange Sherbet, Cherry Pie 8.0, …..sedative is different than sleep strains…..

    • les

I think you need to lay off the mushroom dude….

    • eric

Hi, are there any of those sedative strains that I can take that don´t give anxiety, I caanot tolerate nornal cannabis

  • Kurt Mack

The problem I have, is that these all worked for me 6 months ago. However, do to my use/overuse of concentrates, I am now totally immune to the effects of THC. After vaping 89% THC “Gods Gift” I feel a little euphoria for 10 minutes, but I now NEED Ambien again to sleep. Just a word of caution, on the overuse of concentrates.

    • les

lay off the concentrates for a month, you need a tolerance break. Then go back to flower. Its just too easy to over do it with concetrate for some people. I’ve been taking 5 hits in my vape ( flower only ) before bed for 3 years now. I sleep soundly all night. I have an occasional night were I wake up and have trouble falling back so sleep. If I don’t go back to sleep withing about 30 minutes, I get up and vape 3-4 hits, and go back to bed and sleep the rest of the night. No morning hangover from most strains. I use to have terrible insomnia.
