More about ashtrays
Features separate one from the next. A center spike knocks a bowl out without a poker, notched rims hold a joint between hits, and a lid keeps ash and smell contained. Some are shallow dishes and some are deep wells that hold a week of ash. Check the diameter against where it will actually sit, whether that is a nightstand or a cup holder.
This is the least considered purchase in a smoking setup and the one most often replaced. It pairs with a rolling tray, which covers the grinding and packing side while the ashtray handles what is left. If you smoke pipes rather than joints, favor a shape you can empty and wipe quickly. Prices run from a few dollars into the hundreds depending on the market.
Frequently Asked Questions about ashtrays
What is a cannabis ashtray?
An ashtray is a shallow dish that keeps ash, spent bowls, and finished joint ends in one place instead of on your table. Ashtrays sold for cannabis are usually built a little differently than cigarette ones. Common materials are silicone, glass, and ceramic. Many have wide, deep wells because cannabis ash and roaches take up more room, plus notched rests sized for a joint or a blunt rather than a thin cigarette. Some include a raised center spike, called a debowler, for clearing out a bowl piece. Others come with a gasketed lid that keeps smell and loose ash contained between uses, which matters in a shared space. Sizes range from small personal dishes to wide trays that double as a landing spot for a pipe, a lighter, and a grinder.
What is the difference between silicone, glass, and ceramic ashtrays?
Silicone is the practical pick. It is heat resistant, flexible, dishwasher safe, and will not shatter on a tile floor, though lighter colors stain with resin. Glass and ceramic are heavier, so they stay put on a table and wipe clean, but a dropped one is finished. Two features are worth checking regardless of material: a debowler spike if you smoke from a pipe, and a gasketed lid if containing odor matters more than looks.
Where can I buy an ashtray near me?
Ashtrays are sold at smoke shops and at plenty of dispensaries, since accessories face far fewer restrictions than cannabis itself. Use Leafly to find dispensaries near you that stock accessories, or browse ashtrays on Leafly to compare materials and sizes first.
