Joint rolling machines

A rolling machine is a small hand-cranked device that rolls a cigarette-style joint. The common design uses two rollers joined by a fabric or vinyl belt called an apron. Ground flower sits in the trough, a rolling paper feeds in gum side up, and turning the rollers wraps and seals the paper into an even cylinder. That evenness is the point, since a uniform cylinder burns more consistently than most hand-rolled joints. A second style, the cone loader or filling machine, works differently. It packs material into a pre-rolled paper cone using a plunger or a vibrating base, so no rolling technique is involved. Both types come in fixed sizes rather than adjusting to whatever paper is on hand. Most are plastic with a replaceable apron, though metal-bodied and wooden versions exist, and a few electric models handle the cranking.

Rollers are sold in fixed lengths that correspond to paper sizes: 70mm and 79mm for single wide and 1 1/4 papers, 110mm for king size. A paper shorter than the roller will not catch, and a longer one bunches at the ends. Cone loaders are sized to the cone rather than the paper. The apron is the wear part, and it stretches and tears with use, so favor a machine with replaceable aprons.
