Silicone is close to indestructible, packs flat in a bag, and usually comes with a removable glass bowl insert because silicone alone scorches. Wood and stone hold heat and season over time, and they cannot be soaked in alcohol the way glass can. For a pipe that lives in a backpack, silicone is the durable option.
