How to shop for cannabis concentrates
Decide how you want to consume first, because that rules out most of this page in one step. Extracts meant for a rig, such as live resin, are sold by the gram and scooped out with a tool, so texture and terpene content are what separate one from the next. Vape cartridges hold similar oil in a sealed housing that threads onto a battery instead. Traditional hash sits apart from both, pressed rather than extracted.
Two other categories carry the rest of what you need. The hardware is filed under dabbing gear, and cartridge shoppers usually end up in cannabis vapes as well, since batteries and pens live there. Prices and available textures shift by market, so compare a few local menus before committing to a full gram.
Frequently asked questions about cannabis concentrates
What are dabs?
Dabs are solid concentrates made from extracting the THC from the cannabis. They have more THC than the cannabis buds because it has been concentrated. Before legalization, extracts were made with harsh chemicals and solvents. After weed became legal, new solventless extraction techniques have been developed. The different types of dabs and concentrates are usually determined by the final consistency of concentrate whether it be liquid in a cartridge, like butter for badder, or crumbly like wax. Dabs can be smoked using a dab rig, vaporizer, or added to a bowl. Cartridges need a vape-pen.
What is the difference between solvent and solventless concentrates?
The split is about how the oil comes out of the plant. Solventless concentrates use pressure, ice water and heat, which is how rosin and bubble hash are produced. Solvent-based concentrates use a hydrocarbon or CO2 process that is purged afterward, which is how shatter and most wax are produced. Lab results on the packaging report any residual solvent left behind.
Which concentrate should I start with?
Texture matters less than how you plan to use it. Softer, stickier extracts like cannabis badder scoop easily with a dab tool. Firmer shatter dabs have to be broken off in pieces. If you do not own a rig at all, a vape cartridge threads onto a battery and needs no other equipment.
What equipment do I need to use concentrates?
Most concentrates need a heat source and something to hold them, which in practice means a rig, a nail or banger, and a torch or electronic controller. All of that sits in the dabbing gear category. Cartridges are the exception, since they only need a compatible battery. Anything you buy should state the fittings and sizes it works with.
How can I tell whether a concentrate is well made?
Read the lab report rather than judging by color. A certificate of analysis lists cannabinoid content, terpene content and screening results for pesticides and residual solvent. Consistency and aroma tell you something about how the material was handled and stored after production. Reviews on Leafly from people who bought the same batch fill in the rest.
Are concentrates stronger than flower?
By weight, considerably. Concentrates commonly land in the 60 to 90 percent cannabinoid range against roughly 15 to 30 percent for dried flower, which is why the amounts involved are so much smaller. If you are moving over from flower, treat the two as entirely different units rather than scaling up what you already know.
