Bud on a Budget: What $20, $50, and $100 Buy at a Dispensary in Renton, Washington

Brett KonenLast updated July 28, 2020

The amount of cannabis $20, $50, or $100 will get you varies widely depending on where you are, what you like, and how you shop. That said, any of these amounts can go a long way at a cannabis dispensary if you do it right—for proof, check out what we got at Seattle recreational dispensary Dockside at each of these price points for the last Bud on a Budget.

For this installment, I visited The Evergreen Market in Renton, where the shopping experience was modeled after wine bottle shops and even includes a knowledge “bar” where you can sit at bar stools and chat through the store’s many product options with budtenders. Before heading over, I checked out the dispensary’s menu on Leafly—they update it throughout the day in real time as new products come in and sell out, meaning that when I arrived, everything I wanted was there. My budtender, Eric, also helped me find a few more great items to fill out my shopping list.

Here’s how much $20, $50, and $100 will buy at a recreational cannabis store in Renton, Washington. Keep in mind, though, that if you’re looking to stretch your budget, most dispensaries offer at least some sort of promotion every day of the week—for instance, Evergreen Market’s Blue Friday sales celebrate Seahawks fandom by taking 12% (go 12s) off everything with “blue” in the title, such as Blue Dream and anything by Blue Roots. Check Leafly dispensary pages for details on promotions that’ll maximize your money.

At $20, I kept it simple: two pre-rolls, a white lighter (my favorite kind) plus some backup packs of matches, and an infused apple cider rounded out my buys at $19 total.

What I got:

  • Lemonder Pre-Rolls (2-pack; 1g total) by Seattle’s Private Reserve: $10
  • Infused Apple Drink by Happy Apple: $7
  • White Evergreen Market lighter by Bic: $2
  • Evergreen Market matches packs: Complimentary

Cumulative total: $19

Why I bought it:

Lemonder by Seattle’s Private Reserve | I’ve been hunting down this Seattle-bred strain, which is on our list of the Top 100 Strains to Try, for several weeks now, and hadn’t been able to find it at any of my local stops, so when I saw it on the Evergreen Market menu it went straight to the top of my shopping list.

Happy Apple Infused Apple Drink | My budtender heartily echoed the recommendations I’ve also heard from several others recently to try this tasty cider-style drink that’s perfect for cozy fall evenings in rainy Western Washington.

Lighter and matches | I never say no to a trusty white lighter, and I also love collecting packs of matches, which made grabbing several of those freebies from a basket by the cash register a no-brainer.

At this price point, I chose to treat myself to something I definitely didn’t need but was dying to try—cannabis-infused cocktail bitters, new to the market from Craft Elixirs—as well as a more indica-leaning gram of raw flower for my desktop vape at home.

What I got:

  • Happy Bitters Aromatic Cocktail Bitters (100mg) by Craft Elixirs: $20
  • Obama Kush (1g) by Bondi Farms: $10
  • Lemonder Pre-Rolls (2-pack; 1g total) by Seattle’s Private Reserve: $10
  • Infused Apple Drink by Happy Apple: $7
  • White Evergreen Market lighter by Bic: $2
  • Evergreen Market matches packs: Complimentary

Cumulative total: $49

Why I bought it:

Craft Elixirs Aromatic Cocktail Bitters | I’m a huge cocktail nerd, and love bringing THC into the mix in small doses with Craft Elixirs’ infused simple syrups as well as homemade tinctures. These aromatic bitters are new on the market, and I couldn’t wait to experiment with them. At $20, these are relatively cheap given that cocktails bitters are generally a bit spendy anyway, and then there’s the 100mg THC in the mix.

Obama Kush by Bondi Farms | Another inclusion on our list of 100 Strains to Try Before You Die, I had tried Obama Kush before but the memory of its flavors and effects was fuzzy, so I was excited to revisit it.

Working with a price point of $100 opens a whole lot more of the store. After starting basic under $50 and focusing primarily on flower and edibles, I got into the concentrates and topicals sections, particularly looking at CBD-infused products, to round out my purchases at $99 total.

What I got:

  • Sour TsunamiRed (High-CBD) Vape Cartridge (0.5g) by Marley Natural*: $35
  • CBD Lavender Soap by Wildflower: $12
  • Butterscotch THC Pebbles (10mg) by Magic Kitchen: $3
  • Happy Bitters Aromatic Cocktail Bitters (100mg) by Craft Elixirs: $20
  • Obama Kush (1g) by Bondi Farms: $10
  • Lemonder Pre-Rolls (2-pack; 1g total) by Seattle’s Private Reserve: $10
  • Infused Apple Drink by Happy Apple: $7
  • White Evergreen Market lighter by Bic: $2
  • Evergreen Market matches packs: Complimentary

Cumulative total: $99

Why I bought it:

Marley Natural Sour Tsunami Cart | Having been looking for a great new CBD-forward cartridge to pair with my vape pen, I went with Marley Natural after finding out that these cartridges were nearly sold out—generally a good sign. Marley’s Red cartridges always contain a high-CBD strain: In this case, that meant Sour Tsunami.

Wildflower CBD Lavender Soap | CBD makes a little luxury like lavender soap just a little more luxurious, and with a $100 price cap, treatchoself splurges are fun to make once you’ve got your consumables all picked out.

Magic Kitchen Butterscotch Pebbles | These edibles were the cheapest in the store, and sometimes that’s all that’s needed—your 10mg doesn’t have to come in a gourmet truffle to get the job done.

(Julia Sumpter/Leafly)

A final spend: Tipping is never required, but I pretty much always tip my budtenders, particularly when they’ve gone above and beyond in helping me fill a basket with exactly what I’m looking for, as at Evergreen Market. If you’re intent on getting out the door at truly under $100, skip unnecessaries like the lighter or butterscotch edible in order to thank your budtender for a job well done.

*Editor’s note: Marley Natural and Leafly are both owned by Privateer Holdings.
