Which cannabis strains are high in CBD?

August 5, 2015

CBD cannabis strains are hitting the market so fast, it’s impossible to keep track of them all. The list* below is meant to familiarize you with some of the most common CBD varieties, but keep in mind that your local cannabis shop may have different offerings. If these popular strains aren’t in stock or you’d like to try something new, ask your budtender to point out other standout CBD strains and products.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, a non-intoxicating cannabis molecule with a variety of anecdotal and studied benefits such as:

Which cannabis strains are highest in CBD, according to lab data?

A strain can be either dominant in THC or CBD—or it can be a combination of the two. Both THC and CBD have unique medicinal properties, some of which are amplified when both compounds are present, such as pain management.

CBD-dominant or balanced THC/CBD strains tend to be the best choices for consumers prone to anxiety, as CBD can help curb the negative, paranoid side effects some consumers experience with high-THC strains.

Find CBD strains using Leafly’s Cannabis Guide

*Note: The below strains are categorized based on their average CBD contents according to lab data. These strains tend to express consistent THC:CBD profiles, but you may encounter variations. Always check each product’s tested cannabinoid profile to be certain of its THC and CBD levels.

Common CBD-dominant cannabis strains

Potential uses: Epilepsy, anxiety, inflammation, fatigue

When browsing Leafly for a CBD-dominant variety, look for strains that contain only circles in their Leafly strain flower (example below). This will help you find strains that consistently express high levels of CBD and only trace levels of THC, resulting in a euphoria-free experience conducive to clear-headed relief.

Common balanced THC/CBD cannabis strains

Potential uses: Pain, stress relief, insomnia, inflammation

While CBD-dominant strains on Leafly will be composed of only circles in their Leafly strain flower, a mixed THC/CBD strain will contain both circles and diamonds (example below). For those seeking a strain with gentle euphoria alongside the wellness benefits THC and CBD have to offer, a balanced strain is the way to go.

what do the color catergoration of the strains mean?

    • sarah

Red sativa purple indica green hybrid

    • $parkle Puss

      Sativa = Red
      Hybrid = Green
      Indica = Purple

But keep in mind that those classifications describe the outer appearance of the plant, not necessarily the effects of the high. The effects are determined more by terpenes and other cannabinoids, like THCv and CBN, than by the plant’s appearance. The Sativa/Indica/Hybrid classifications are outdated and will one day become totally irrelevant as cannabis science advances. But don’t take my word for it:

I have been buying pot in Washington State since the state has had legalized recreational, even tho I am a Oregon resident. Prices for my CBD pot bought in Oregon is typically 1.5-2x higher than THC pot. The CBD pot sold in Washington State typically costs me 25% – 40% less in Washington State. Its worth my drive up there. Oregon State cops have said, when I asked them, in the past they will not typically stop a person for simply buying pot in Washington State and transporting it to Oregon. By buying in Washington State, I am able to get strains I know have the highest CBD available for the lowest cost to me. Main Street MJ, MSMJ in Vancouver Washington, a 35 minute drive for me, they have a website that is updated every day or so.

Oregon has a policy of mandating recreational pot to be grown outdoors, so indoor hydroponically grown strains are not possible. This may change as Oregon progresses into its own recreational pot laws and sales. Its becoming more scientifically known how the importance of CBD variety can help medical users. Individuals who have the Oregon Medical MJ card can grow their own CBD indoors, but Iam lazy, its cost effective for me to just buy what I use in a month. About 5 months ago I was given enough bud to make 128 oz of CBD oil which I infused into a tincture. I use approximately 80 – 125 ml a month. As a tincture Iam able to obtain purity levels of 30% – 45%

  • Marie

What about JLL (Juanita La Lagrimosa)?

    • Think a little further

The author seems to not be that educated on this matter unfortunately.. There are sooo many CBD strains they never mention, bot unstable like Juanita, Reggae Seeds, and stable like all of the genetics from CBD Crew, who also produced for Dutch passion, THSeeds, Paradise Seeds, Kanabia and many more! Seems like they are not that interested in the European development.
And in this story, they even gave high CBD to a plant that has no CBD, Critical Mass… Knowledge needed!

      • SpiderBiff

I’m interested to find out which high cbd strains are available in Europe. Could someone please share or post on here. Many thanks.

  • Sara Giba

Sour Tsunami…last batch I found was combined THC of .47% and 11.2% cbd. Great medicinal effect.

  • Think a little further

Critical Mass does not contain CBD, CBD Critical Mass does. (and I know, as I work for CBD Crew, who made the strain )
We used Critical Mass ( does NOT contain high CBD at all ) and crossed with a high CBD Parent to make a stable genetic. You ALWAYS get high CBD with CBD Critical Mass, you NEVER get high CBD with the original Critical Mass. Pleas do some research, this is dangerous misguided information. 🙂

    • Roue Williams

Thank You, working with CBD Critical Mass. I will do my own analysis at home using Cannalyse thin film chromatography test. Will post results here. Thank you for developing this strain, I have hopes for treating symptoms of MS, anxiety, pain, seizures, and chrons disease.

If you know of one that takes the cake in any or all of those areas of treatment I would be grateful for a plug for a strain a three. Sooo many choices nowadays.

  • Naomi Reed

I’m looking into replacing my daughter’s Baclofen medication with CBD to be taken orally or an oil. She has a lot of tone in her arms and is high risk for seizures. She has CP (cerebral palsy). Any suggestions will help.

I think this site should have a filter where we can choose which properties we are looking for that will present a list of those plants that process those properties.

    • FredLaffan

Hi Naomi… As a pregnant woman (Fred is my cat) who is taking CBD capsules for anxiety and nausea I recommend pluscbd capsules. They have a very calming effect

  • Ann Maes

Does anyone know the best CBD strain for M
    acular Degeneration???

  • Razmataz

What about PB&J? I can’t find the CBD to THC ratio, but just going off my memory, it is really high in CBD.

  • Lisa Darroch

I’m very new to the cannabis world and I’m doing some research because I’m trying to get a medical marijuana card for my various problems. I have severe anxiety and insomnia on top of other multiple other issues. I’m looking for a High CBD Strain that has minimal THC in it to help me sleep. I’m not looking to get high as this will most likely increase my anxiety so this would be purely for medicinal purposes. If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated!!

    • 1969nam

Lisa……I am in the same boat as you are. I submitted my medical card application in Delaware last week. Takes about 3-4 weeks for approval. I also am looking for a similar strain high in CBD, low in THC. Best of luck to you !

    • Allison Marie

Try shaman it’s thc ratio is less than 1‰ im forgetting the cbd ratio for some reason but I it’s above 10%. I have very bad generalized anxiety disorder, and had paranoia from weed which caused me to stop smoking weed for years. Dispensarys are a wonderful thing for people like us because we now are able to find strains and methods that fit our needs. For ur first strain pick out the shaman and move up from there to a higher thc count (ex. 6‰ thc)
Let me know how it goes! Mssg me on Instagram if ud like I’m on the same journey @allybabeexo

      • Lisa Darroch

        Thanks very much! 😊

        • Just420Rosy

You’re not alone, ladies! I’m on this journey with you. It would be so much nicer if there was one reputable place to get information!

    • $parkle Puss

ACDC, Ringo’s Gift, Charlotte’s Web, Harlequin & Harle-Tsu are some good ones to start with. Ringo’s Gift has a 24:1 ratio of CBD to THC, and ACDC’s ratio is 20:1. Barely psychoactive at those doses.

You can also buy hemp and hemp-derived CBD which has no more than 0.3% THC by law. These products are legal in all 50 states due to the trace amounts of THC.

      • Barbara Lorenzo

But does the Hemp CBD really work. I want it to supplement my son’s psychiatric meds for Bi-polar with psychosis and anxiety.

I understand that Seawarp – made in BC, Canada, has high CBD ratio over THC. Does anyone know the ratio? I need more CBD than THC for my ailment.

Hello, Can someone please tell me, Is Master Kush (Indica strain) good to treat cancer? Does anyone know the THC and CBD Content of Master Kush? Also, are there any recommendations to treat stage 4 Ovarian cancer?

  • quel-y

Nice quick summary but missing CBD Dutch Treat, Dutchberry, Durga Mata II CBD, and a bunch of others from the list.

  • Mike Freimann

Cbd’s are such great medical uses. But THC is very medical for depression, neuropathy, diabetic complications, sleep disorders, increase in appetite for HIV and Cancer patients

Blue Jay Way flowers are awesome. Much like Harlequin, but hard to find.

  • What % is considered high for CBD?

    • Charles Elliott

anything over 4% is called high content but in reality 20% is achievable

  • $parkle Puss

Y’all leaving out the high-CBD hemp strains like Cherry Wine, which has 14% CBD and less than 0.03% THC. There’s also Otto II, BaOx, Trump, The Wife, Charlotte’s Cherries & Colorado Cherry to name a few.

There’s a whole new market opening up in states like Kentucky for the growing of these potent hemp strains. I hope Leafly will include them in their list of strains. Many people prefer cannabis that lacks THC.

  • Charles Elliott

    Tora Bora
A cross breed between L.A. Confidential and X18 Pure Pakistani, this is a 99% indica dominant strain reported to have weighed in at 14.5% CBD and 6% THC. This one makes our list for its high CBD and reasonable THC level, which we only recommend for the veteran smoker. This bud is beneficial in chronic pain relief and sleep insomnia. The buds tend to be blue in coloration and with very earthy and pungent notes of spice as well as taste. The Tora Bora plant is rising in popularity with a quick grow time of 8-9 weeks.

Where can I get seeds for Charlottes web and Avidekel? Are they even available for purchase?

  • briteleaf

Super CBDx is 17% CBD with less than 1%THC. Recommend vaping a bit with high THC buds

  • Bryan Rowley

Check out ANNCANNMED for more information, health prescription and medical purchases. They have extremely potent products at good prices too. Recommend this dispensary to anyone looking at Cannabis for help!

  • Sasha Copeland

What strains are good for autism/adhd for a 6 year old child (if this is good for children)?

    • Lucas

You shouldnt’ give marijuana to your kids to smoke until they are 16, it can cause some brain damage (making them slow at thinking) but you can use the CBD oil.

      • Akiko Fujishima

Some people may want to make their own oils at home so they know exactly what goes into it, and not actually looking to have their child smoke.

  • Good selection. You can find these at KanaRelief

  • Harlequin or Harley crosses are the ones I use the most.
